Akala Miima Hoseah
Principal Research Scientist at the Center for Clinical Research Kenya Medical Research Institute/Walter Reed Army Institute of Research – Africa (KEMRI/WRAIR-A)

Dr. Akala started his career as a molecular and cell biologist in 2001 in tropical diseases epidemiology using molecular marker analyses, in vitro malaria drug resistance and in vivo therapeutic efficacy studies at the KEMRI/WRAIR-A. He has published over 75 articles in peer review journals, successfully applied for grants and mentored 14 graduate students. Dr. Akala has since 2016 strengthened drug discovery and development using computer aided drug discovery methods besides classical library screening in Kenya. Currently he is a lead investigator on the epidemiology of malaria drug resistance patterns in Kenya study funded by Armed Forces Health Surveillance Division, the Kenya Ministry of health’s HRP2/3 deletion survey funded by the WHO/global fund and a co-investigator for other international and local collaborative research studies.

Dr Akala has mentored 2 postdoc, graduated 3PhD and 12 MSc student. In August 2024, Dr. akala received nomination as a Fellow of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygene (FASTMH) where he serves as a International Membership Committee as well as a member of ASTMH travel award committee. In 2024, he was selected as Regional Representative for the African Region (AFRO) American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene Committee on Global Health (ACGH)

Dr. Hoseah Miima Akala is a parasitologist with medicinal chemistry background and holds the position of Principal Research Scientist at the Center for Clinical Research Kenya Medical Research Institute/Walter Reed Army Institute of Research – Africa (KEMRI/WRAIR-A). He is the Co-director, Malaria Drugs and diagnostics Resistance Program at the KEMRI/WRAIR-A

He received his PhD (Zoology) from Makerere University in 2014 and his Master of Science in Medicinal Chemistry from the Jomo Kenyatta University in 2008. He also has a post-doctoral training in bioinformatics and genomics from the Centre for Genomics Regulation, Barcelona, Spain under the Novartis-Africa mobility fellowship program and WelcomeTrust / CNHR from the Oxford, UK. He also holds a certificate in infectious Disease Research from the University of Florida, FL, USA Region (AFRO) American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene Committee on Global Health (ACGH)
